There is such a thing as too much variety

A buffet of manliness.

If I put Call of Duty Black Ops side-by-side with Modern Warfare 2, I honestly can’t say which is the better game. Boiled down, the two games contrast thus: MW2 is more tightly focused if a little suffocating at times, and the gameplay flows much better. BO, though, has a lot of variety – or rather, as my post title indicates, too much variety – but the whole thing plays out like… well, like Call of Duty World at War.

Loquacious Summations : Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising

Not quite an “infantry simulator” like the original, but engaging nonetheless.

Wolfenstein

Grr.

I’ve always been a fan of the Wolfenstein series – Wolf3D was my first FPS, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is one of my favourite games of all times and has the most solid multiplayer component ever to grace a shooter – but I was pretty dumbstruck when they announced a sequel. It’s been a while since the last game, gaming has changed quite a bit, and so have the mechanics and expectations; I’ll try and judge this on its own merit.

Far Cry 2 : the good life

EDIT: I drafted this back when the game just came out. Don’t ask me why I’ve never posted it.

You can’t break a man the way you break a dog, or a horse. The harder you beat a man, the taller he stands. To break a man’s will, to break his spirit, you have to break his mind. Men have this idea that there’s a way to fight with dignity, that there’s a proper way to kill someone. It’s absurd, it’s anesthetic. We need it to endure the bloody horror of murder. You must destroy that idea. Show him what a messy, terrible thing it is to kill a man, and then show him that you relish in it.

Operation 7 : the better they are…

EDIT: The picture below is what happens when I’m bored on a Saturday morning.

Far from all the parts available to the AK user.

I mentioned in the actual coverage-like thing that I found Op7 to be very satisfying. And naturally, the better something is, the more apparent the misses become.

Note that this is purely nitpicking or griping on my part.

Operation7 : Single Redeeming Factor Exemplar

SWAT officers decorate the main menu, for inexplicable reasons.

There is a fairly new – as in, less than half the years of the juggernauts – MMOFPS in the market, the free shooter Operation7 by… a Korean studio which I don’t know (Park Esm?). As might be expected from the Koreans, Op7 is incredibly addictive despite some – let’s be honest here – very stupid design decisions.

Wolfenstein @ E3 '08

Having played both Wolfenstein 3D and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I’m not sure what to think of this. There is that incessant, “What, they’re doing it again?” thing going, but then again, RtCW was a pretty decent shooter so long as you ignore the Second World War backdrop – and realism too, I suppose.

Ah well. Maybe this time, Hitler will show up with eight miniguns and a tesla-powered battlesuit. Riding a mecha. In space.
